The Liebster Award

liebster2Ah yes, the illustrious, but ever so mysterious Liebster Award! I tried to research it, as I’m sure many others have before me, but couldn’t find anything about where it started, and the rules seem to be…well…rather fluid. Regardless, it’s a fun way to both recognize and discover other new bloggers! I’m really flattered that my friend and former classmate Paula over at Beyond the Blue Coat nominated me (I highly recommend checking out her site).

For those of you who I’ve nominated or who are simply new to this like me, here’s how it works (as best I understand it):

  • Post the Liebster award badge somewhere on your site.
  • Give 11 interesting facts about yourself.
  • Answer the questions that the person who nominated you has given you.
  • Make up your own questions (5-11) for your nominees.
  • Nominate other bloggers who are fairly new to the blogosphere and pay it forward.

So let’s get right to it, shall we?

Part I – Share 11 interesting facts about yourself:

  1. I’m adopted and, with the support of my family, brought my biological mother back into my life when I turned 21.
  2. I’m multi-racial (Irish, African, Hawaiian, and American Indian).
  3. I thoroughly enjoy knitting.
  4. I’m mildly ambidextrous. I write with my left hand and do just about everything else (bat, use the computer, shoot, belay, knit, brush my teeth, etc.) right-handed. I also snowboard regular. But I can catch and throw with either hand.
  5. I am absolutely phobic about singing in front of people.
  6. In terms of appearances, my biggest insecurity is my hair. Despite what the picture on my About page might lead you to believe, it’s actually insanely curly (think Merida from Brave) and a lot of people bullied me for it when I was a kid.
  7. I don’t drink coffee. At all.
  8. I may or may not be a closet anime nerd.
  9. I do love me some Oxford commas.
  10. My best friend and I essentially became friends twice. We thought we were meeting for the first time in high school, but in college, we realized that we were in the same dance class when we were really little – and that her mom was one of my dance instructors.
  11. Before I got into climbing, I rode and showed horses for over 10 years (I still get to be a barn rat when I go home visit to my parents).

Part II – Answer questions from the blogger who nominated you:

What is your favorite quote?

“Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of Nature’s darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but Nature’s sources never fail.”     – John Muir

Why do you write? Because it keeps me sane and therefore happy. Or maybe because it makes me happy and therefore sane? Something like that.

Have you ever had an experience that took your breath away? Yep. It involved a curious bull elephant…and also happens to be the topic of my next post. Stay tuned!

What scent do you associate with a memory? My grandparents’ house always had a distinct smell when I was younger. It’s really hard to describe, somewhere between a pie baking in the oven and earthy potpourri. To this day, I have no idea what it was, but I associate it with some of my happiest childhood memories – big holiday dinners with all of my relatives, “helping” Grammy clean the yard by smashing weeds with a croquet mallet, getting to stay up late to watch Toonami…

What are your hobbies? If by hobbies, you mean activities I pursue with relentless abandon, climbing…climbing…and more climbing.

Favorite scientific subject? Anything related to conservation.

Dogs or cats, and why? Aaaand cue the existential crisis. (Thanks Paula :p) I’ve been thinking long and hard about this one. I’ve had both cats and dogs my entire life, never one without the other, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I cannot possibly choose between my fur-babies. However, in terms of which will mostly likely end up living with me first, it will probably be a cat. I plan to get a dog when I have a bigger outdoor space for her/him to run around in.

What is your favorite song? “Paradise” by Coldplay.

Abstract or realistic art? Realistic art, for sure. I have a hard time relating to abstract art and often find it too chaotic. With realistic art, you know what you’re looking at, but you’re still looking at it through someone else’s eyes.

Do you have any tattoos? Not yet, but I have one planned for the near future!

Part III – Create questions for your nominees:

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

What’s the one food you can’t live without? (Coffee doesn’t count!)

What has been your greatest adventure so far?

Has there been a book, painting, piece of music, or other work of art that has changed your life?

When was the last time you were wrong about something?

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

Where do you do your best thinking?

What’s your favorite mode of transportation?

Part IV – Nominate other bloggers!

My nominees are blogs whose content I follow closely and who I think are making amazing, meaningful contributions here on the Interwebs. This list will continue to grow as I hear back from other bloggers.

Outside – this gorgeous blog belongs to Sebastian, another friend and former classmate of mine. His passion for herps and the outdoors in general is contagious. I’ve learned so much from him, and I strongly urge you to check out his work.

LEAHving for Adventures – Leah started her blog when she left to study abroad in Denmark. She’s back state-side now, but if you want a real-world, first-person account of what it’s like (including the feeling of missing major holidays), look no further.

All Things Fashionating – A fabulous blog about fashion, fitness, and life as a Jersey girl living in Cali.

  1. Thanks for accepting the nomination! It’s exciting to see how much you can learn about fellow writers through a simple Q&A. I knew you’d cop out on the cats vs. dogs. 😛 Just kidding, I don’t know that I could pick. I’m extremely jealous that you get to go home and ride. It has been ages since I’ve ridden seriously. I miss it but my wallet does not. Also, can’t wait to see what you have in store for your tattoo! You can really tell a lot about a person by what they choose to have painfully and eternally inscribed into their skin.
